The buses arrived on the cold day and the teams waited to be giving a changing room. As both teams waited they found out that they were going to be playing age groups that were a year older than they were. The under 14s would play an under 15s team and the under 15s would play the under 16s. This made no difference to the preparation of the game as the under 14s went out to warm up it was drilled into their heads that they were not going to be beaten even by a older age group.
The game started really well for Wheatley getting off to a flying start camping out in the oppositions 22. After ten minutes the breakthrough came as James Carlyle crashed over the line from 5 yards out. This was converted by Ryan Craswell. Castricumse restarted the game and Wheatley took a strong position in Castricumse 22 again. As the ball was shipped from one side to the other the ball came to Josh Beasley who made a strong run to the line it looked liked he had scored the try but the ref ruled it due to a knock on. The ref then gave the scrum to Wheatley. This was the wrong decisicon, this then lead to Wheatley’s second try. Ryan picked up from the back of the scrum and powered over the line to score in the corner. He then failed to convert the kick. The game was restarted and Wheatley had gone off the boil this gave Castricumse a chance to get back into the game. After several missed tackles Castricumse had good hands along the line to score this was not converted. At half time Wheatley were up 12-5.
The second half began and tactical kicking from Ryan, Chris and Oli gave Wheatley a strong position. The ball was thrown in from Castricumse line out and cleared straight to Oli. Then Oli went on a jinking run from the edge of the 22 to score Wheatley's third try this was not converted by Ryan making the score 17-5. After a strong start to the second half Wheatley had a set back. Castricumse number 10 chipped the ball over the top and gathered the kick and went through to score and he got up and converted the kick. This then made the score 17-12. After a talk from the coaches Wheatley then took the game by the scruff of the neck and played flowing rugby. They were once again in the oppositions 22 and a lovely ball from Chris Blessed gave Oli a huge hole to run through and once again Oli danced and scored again to give Wheatley their fourth try this was again converted by Ryan giving Wheatley a 24-12 lead.
Just before anything could go better it did another good kick from Oli gave the platform form the backs, the move was called and once again Oli jinked through again offloading to Josh who this time got the ball down for Wheatley’s fifth try and made the score 29-12 the kick was missed by Ryan. The game was finished strongly by Wheatley who had numerous chances to score but couldn’t breach the Castricumse defence for a sixth try. After a really strong performance from Wheatley everyone was hoping they could do the same for the games the next day.
